Winners in the Outdoor category of the fifth annual Next Generation Luminaires™ Solid-State Lighting Design Competition were announced today at the Strategies in Light conference in Santa Clara, CA. Sponsored by DOE, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers, NGL was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaires for general illumination in commercial lighting applications.
Out of 120 outdoor entries from 42 manufacturers, 37 were recognized as winners this year, meaning they met the competition's stringent requirements and were considered worthy of specification. A panel of eight judges, most of them from the architectural lighting community, evaluated the entries based on such characteristics as lighting quality, appearance, construction, serviceability, efficacy, and value.
Four of this year's winners were designated as Best in Class. They came from four different manufacturers and covered four different areas of outdoor lighting:
•The Lighting Quotient for its for its fraqtir™ Outdoor – Style S170 facade lighting fixture
•Relume Technologies, Inc. for its Oxford decorative acorn streetscape and walkway fixture
•GE Lighting for its Evolve™ LED Scalable Cobrahead roadway lighting fixture
•Edge Lighting for its TV and Dial LED decorative wall sconces
Although they did not earn recognition for their lighting and energy performance, three entries were noted for the interesting form factors used in their designs.
