NEMA Publishes White Paper On Outdoor Lighting Issues And Quality Lighting Applications
September 8, 2010

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published LSD 11-2010 White Paper on Outdoor Lighting Issues and Quality Lighting Applications. This white paper, last published in 2004, was produced by NEMA’s Lighting Systems Division.

LSD 11 identifies specific lighting issues, defines correct lighting terminology, and provides straightforward technical guidance applicable to outdoor lighting installations in the U.S. The publication is intended to be used by anyone dealing with the selection, installation, or management of outdoor lighting systems.

This revision includes updated information on existing regulations, top issues in the industry, and lighting technologies.

“A number of factors go into the process of selecting the right outdoor lighting for a particular application,” said Joseph Howley of GE Lighting, chair of the Lighting Systems Division. “Decision-makers address energy consumption, sky glow, visibility, safety and security, interaction with natural habitats, and other concerns. LSD 11 helps make sense of the many—and sometimes conflicting—guides and regulations on lighting.”

LSD 11 may be downloaded at no charge by visiting www.nema.org/stds/lsd11.cfm.

This publication joins around 40 other white papers in the NEMA LSD series, which covers a range of lighting topics. Other parts of the series cover subjects like ballast disconnects, occupancy sensors, and photoluminescent exit signage. NEMA is the association of electrical and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. These products are used in utility, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications. The association’s Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) Division represents manufacturers of cutting-edge medical diagnostic imaging equipment including MRI, CT, x-ray, and ultrasound products. Worldwide sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing and Mexico City.
