NEMA Publishes American National Standards For Roadway And Area Lighting Equipment
November 26, 2008

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI C136.20-2008 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Fiber-Reinforced Composite (FRC) Lighting Poles and ANSI C136-36B-2008 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Concrete Lighting Poles.

According to Rick Sprowls, chairman of the ASC 136 committee that prepared both standards, ANSI C136.20 is a new, updated version of a previously rescinded standard. “ANSI C136.20 includes nomenclature, dimensional data, performance criteria, and some interchangeability features for standard poles as well as those that must meet breakaway requirements for poles,” Sprowls said.

“ANSI C136-36B is a new standard that applies to concrete lighting poles used in roadway and area lighting equipment and includes nomenclature, performance criteria, marking and recordkeeping requirements, and certain minimal material needs. It does not cover concrete poles manufactured with any modified concrete mix incorporating the use of polymers or other modifiers.”

The contents and scope of ANSI C136.20may be viewed, and a hard copy or electronic copy purchased for $40, by visiting NEMA’s Web site at www.nema.org/stds/c136-20.cfm. The contents and scope of ANSI C136.36Bmay be viewed, and a hard copy or electronic copy purchased for $40, by visiting NEMA’s Web site at www.nema.org/stds/c136-36b.cfm. Standards may also be purchased by contacting IHS at 800-854-7179 (within the U.S.), 303-397-7956 (international), 303-397-2740 (fax), or on the Web at global.ihs.com.

NEMA is the trade association of choice for the electrical manufacturing industry. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end-use of electricity. These products are used in utility, medical imaging, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications. Domestic production of electrical products sold worldwide exceeds $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing, São Paulo, and Mexico City.
