NEMA Publishes American National Standard For Roadway And Area Lighting Equipment—Induction Li
September 29, 2009

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI C136.38-2009 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Induction Lighting. This new standard was produced by the ANSI Committee 136 for Roadway and Area Lighting.

ANSI C136.38 defines the electrical and mechanical requirements of induction type light sources for use in roadway and area lighting luminaires. It also describes how the induction system should be rated and the information necessary for inclusion on the product label.

“As the lighting industry realizes new technology evolving for street and area lighting, ANSI is proud to publish C136.38, the first standard to cover induction lighting,” said Becky Rainer, chair of the Roadway and Area Lighting Committee. “The experts on the ANSI C136 committee worked together to provide important information on this new technology for all concerned parties. This will prove to be a valuable standard for those involved in induction lighting.”

This addition to the ANSI C136 series joins more than thirty other standards covering a range of topics related to roadway and area lighting, including filament lamps, vertical tenons, and vandal shields. To view a comprehensive list of standards in the ANSI C136 series, go to http://www.nema.org/stds/C136.cfm.

The contents and scope of ANSI C136.38 may be viewed, or a hardcopy or electronic copy purchased for $36, by visiting http://www.nema.org/stds/c136-38.cfm, or by contacting IHS at 800-854-7179 (within the U.S.), 303-397-7956 (international), 303-397-2740 (fax), or global.ihs.com.

NEMA is the association of electrical and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end use of electricity. These products are used in utility, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications. The association’s Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) Division represents manufacturers of cutting-edge medical diagnostic imaging equipment including MRI, CT, x-ray, and ultrasound products. Worldwide sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing and Mexico City.
