World-renowned keynote and impact speakers, addressing multiple facets of lighting and design, lead the more than 170 presenters taking the stages at LIGHTFAIR® International (LFI®) 2014 opening June 1, 2014 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Their commentaries across various forums, seminars, courses and featured presentations will help to advance the vast educational offerings marking the 25th anniversary of the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference from June 1-5 in Las Vegas (Trade Show: June 3-5; Conference: June 1-5).
Craig W. Hartman, FAIA, design partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), presents “Shadow and Light: Reflections on Architecture” – Pre-Conference Institute Keynote Luncheon on June 1. Hartman’s work in the United States, Europe, and Asia ranges from entire urban districts to singular works of commercial, civic and cultural architecture. His work acknowledges issues of place involving climate, physical and cultural landscape and historic precedent. Hartman’s work has been recognized with more than 120 awards for design including nine national American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Awards, multiple Gold LEED® certifications, two current LEED® Platinum projects, a Federal Design Achievement Award in the 2000 Presidential Design Awards Program and the Maybeck Award.
Richard Seymour, co-founder and design director, seymourpowell, will inspire attendees with a look ahead to the future of design and how dramatic changes are turning science fiction into reality in “Organicz: The Organic Digital Interface” – Pre-Conference Institute Keynote Luncheon on June 2. As one of Europe’s best known and most accomplished designers, Richard Seymour’s career spans more than 30 years and a huge range of creative disciplines. Seymour has been the recipient of numerous awards including D&AD Award for Outstanding Contribution to Design, the FX Lifetime Achievement Award and the Senior Fellowship of the Royal College of Art.
Martin Klaasen, owner, founder and principal, Klaasen Lighting Design, discusses the impact of the fast evolution of LED lighting technology on lighting design and explores the question “Have LEDs High-Jacked the Lighting Design Industry?” – Exhibit Hall Impact Speaker on June 3. Martin is an award-winning lighting designer, design consultant, lecturer and resource speaker with more than 30 years of experience in the lighting industry. His designs have received national and international lighting design awards. The list of his expertise and experiences spans all applications and projects around the globe. Martin is also passionate about sharing his knowledge through his blog, "Light Talk," and compiled his first year of blogging into a book.
Participants of LFI’s first-ever forums – LFI Healthcare Lighting Forum and LFI Hospitality Lighting Forum – will join together to attend the keynote presentation: “The Wellness Revolution: The Next Driver of the Lighting Industry.”
Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic, is a graduate of Williams College and the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. He performed his residency in internal medicine at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Roizen is the co-founder and Chair of the RealAge, Inc., Scientific Advisory Board. He is a Past Chair of a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee and a former editor for six medical journals. Dr. Roizen has published more than 165 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials and four medical books (one, a medical best-seller), and received 13 U.S. and many foreign patents.
The Honorable Richard Gephardt, former United States Congressman and House of Representatives Majority Leader and president & chief executive officer of Gephardt Government Affairs. Gephardt also serves as public spokesperson for clients on coalitions to bring about policy solutions to healthcare reform and climate change. Widely known for his advocacy for international human rights, Gephardt currently serves as Chairman of the National Endowment for Democracy. He is a member of The Council on Foreign Relations and an Advisory Board member to the International Conservation Caucus Foundation. He also serves as Advisory Board chairman at the Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis.
Keynote luncheon presentations are included for all attendees registered for courses during the two Institute days that make up the LFI Pre-Conference program.
