LED Lighting Institute Offers Hands-On Learning
April 8, 2015

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is offering its popular LED Lighting Institute—a 3-day seminar for industry professionals covering the latest advances in LED lighting technology. This session will include new content on networked lighting and OLEDs, not included in past sessions.

The LED Lighting Institute will be held May 12-14, 2015 at the LRC in Troy, New York. The 30,000 sq. ft. university-based center for lighting research and education is the largest in the world, with the only university lighting laboratories accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP Lab Code: 200480-0).

"The hands-on aspect is key," said Dan Frering, Director of Education at the LRC. "With these quickly-evolving technologies, it is easy to fall behind and you really have to learn by doing."

Those who attend the LED Lighting Institute will learn the best methods for incorporating LEDs and OLEDs into architectural lighting fixture designs and lighting systems, and compare system components from a wide variety of manufacturers to determine operating characteristics, rated life, lumen output, distribution, and other important specification factors. The program culminates with participants designing, building, and evaluating their own lighting fixtures.

"The LED Lighting Institute offers objective information on current lighting technologies so that participants gain realistic expectations for using LEDs and OLEDs in place of traditional light sources," said N. Narendran, Ph.D., Director of Research at the LRC. "In addition, participants learn methods for measuring and quantifying LED and OLED performance."

This intensive workshop continues to grow in popularity, and Frering suggests early registration, as enrollment is limited to 30 students, and sessions fill up quickly. Those who sign up by April 28 will receive a discount on the registration fee. More than 500 people from around the globe have completed the course, which is held in spring and fall each year.

Participants will earn 22.25 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Health, Safety, Welfare Learning Units (LUs/HSW) for attending the LED Lighting Institute. Participants also earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and will receive a Continuing Education Certificate in LED Lighting from the LRC. The LED Lighting Institute is eligible for LEED and NCQLP maintenance credits.

About the Lighting Research Center

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the world's leading center for lighting research and education. Established in 1988 by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the LRC has been pioneering research in energy and the environment, light and health, transportation lighting and safety, and solid-state lighting for more than 25 years. In 1990, the LRC became the first university research center to offer graduate degrees in lighting and today the LRC offers both a M.S. in lighting as well as a Ph.D. to educate future leaders in lighting. Internationally recognized as the preeminent source for objective information on all aspects of lighting technology and application, LRC researchers conduct independent, third-party testing of lighting products in the LRC's state of the art photometric laboratories, the only university lighting laboratories accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP Lab Code: 200480-0). LRC researchers are continuously working to develop new and better ways to measure the value of light and lighting systems, such as the effect of light on human health, and the effect of light on plant physiology. The LRC believes that by accurately matching the lighting technology and application to the needs of the end user, it is possible to design lighting that benefits both society and the environment.
