Kim Lighting Outdoor Architectural Lighting Products Used For High Profile Bridge Reconstruction
January 25, 2009

Kim Lighting announced today that several of its products were used as part of the $234 million reconstruction of the I-35 Bridge in Minneapolis, Minn., that collapsed during the summer of 2007.

The lighting for the bridge was designed by leading lighting design firm Randy Burkett Lighting Design in St. Louis. Kim Lighting products were used to light three areas on and around the bridge: the two stone monuments on either side of the bridge marking the precise spot where the Mississippi River begins (Kim Lighting's DBF semi-recessed floodlights with blue filter), a pedestrian walkway underneath the bridge leading down to the river (Kim Lighting's 70W metal halide GEM® Bollards) and the illumination of the abutments underneath the bridge (Kim Lighting's AFL Architectural Floodlights).

"We had to achieve very specific lighting levels, and needed products that could accommodate our performance requirements while also withstanding the harsh Minneapolis winters," said Randy Burkett, president of Randy Burkett Lighting Design. "We selected Kim Lighting for these critical parts of the lighting design because their products met the unique needs of each particular situation."

The I-35 Bridge reopened on September 18, three months ahead of schedule. It collapsed on August 1, 2007, killing 13 people and injuring 145.
