Day-Brite Capri Omega 2008 Lighting Institute Seminars a Huge Success
October 31, 2008

The Day-Brite Capri Omega (DCO) Lighting Institute has finished its 2008 seminar schedule, which was held at its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified facility (LEED-CI).

The facility was designed to educate visitors about the importance of good lighting and highlight the importance of energy conservation. The seminars provided lighting education on sustainability, retail spaces, educational facilities and office spaces.

The Sustainability Seminar was designed for owners, facility or energy managers, architects, engineers, lighting designers, end-users and others in the lighting industry involved in supporting energy initiatives. The Sustainability Seminar covered cutting edge ideas in design, new technology developments in luminaires, the use of alternative lighting systems, and improvements in development and manufacturing techniques that offer continuous improvement in energy performance. The energy initiatives that drive lighting design and specification were reviewed such as ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1, LEED and EPACT 2005, as well as a good understanding of how to best match user needs with technology options.

The Retail Spaces Seminar was developed to educate specifiers, storeowners, merchandisers and facility managers. The seminar provided information on how to apply lighting as a critical and effective merchandising tool in order to save money and reduce energy costs, while improving the retail environment. In depth technical reviews in the form of recommended guidelines or protocols to consider when addressing lighting retail spaces provided focus on merchandising effectiveness, store image and brand promotion, customer comfort, safety and operating cost.
The Office Space Seminar focused on lighting issues and their solutions for development and creation of the most sustainable and efficient workplace lighting environment. Issues included cause and solution of glare problems, factors and considerations affecting task visibility, psychological effects of lighting in offices, creating the most energy efficient and economical lighting system, and the importance of composition and color in the luminous environment.

The Education Facilities Seminar was designed as a guide for lighting educational spaces, focusing on providing a visual environment that is supportive of learning processes. Emphasis was placed on critical design factors including daylighting and controls, direct glare, horizontal and vertical illuminance and light distribution on surfaces and task planes.

The Lighting Institute will announce dates and topics for the 2009 Seminar Series in early 2009. For more information please visit http://dcolighting.com/LightingInstitute/index.cfm.
