Cooper Lighting, a division of Cooper Industries, Ltd. (NYSE: CBE), has announced the winners of the 32nd Annual SOURCE Awards national lighting design competition. The winners were recognized at Lightfair International 2009 in New York at the Keynote Speaker luncheon on May 4 in front of an audience of 500 design professionals. Seven professional awards and six student awards were presented.

Top honors in the Professional Commercial Category went to Sean O’Connor and Martha Lopacki of Sean O’Connor Lighting, Beverly Hills, California, for the lighting of AT&T Experience prototype stores (multiple locations). In addition, the design team of Robert H. Singer and Kim Slivka of Robert Singer & Associates, Basalt, Colorado, won in the Professional Residential Category for the Watson Divide Residence in Snowmass, Colorado. Robert H. Singer was also presented with an Honorable Mention award in the Professional Commercial Category for the lighting design of the Vessel nightclub located in San Francisco.

One additional Honorable Mention award was presented in the Professional Residential Category to Andrew Beldecos of Andrew Beldecos Lighting Design, Marietta, Georgia, for the lighting of the City Condo Penthouse (location withheld). Three Award of Recognition honors were presented and included two Commercial Category projects. Lynn M. Surdock & Amy B. Zeboor of WPF Engineering, Belmont, Michigan, was honored for the Rockford Public School Lighting Upgrade in Rockford, Michigan and Robert Daniels of Brilliant Lighting Design, Miami, Florida for the exterior of the Crown Lighting of Blue/Green Diamond Condominiums in Miami Beach. Steven L. Klein of Klein Lighting, Milwaukee, Wisconsin also was awarded an Award of Recognition for the Palm Desert Residence in Palm Desert, California in the Professional Residential Category.

Students in the design, architectural, lighting and engineering disciplines enter conceptual lighting design installations. Six awards were given: one Winner, two Honorable Mentions and three Awards of Recognition. Emily M. Myers from Washington State University Interdisciplinary Design Institute (Spokane) picked up the winning honor for her conceptual lighting design project titled Spa Six. Myers was under the direction of Judy Theodorson, the Associate Professor of WSU’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute and Director of the university’s Integrated Design Lab/Inland Northwest.

Honorable Mention awards were presented to Natalie Goldsmith of Virginia Tech for her Wegmans Supermarket Corporate Office project and Rebecca Marie Scott of Washington State University Interdisciplinary Design Institute for her project called Clarity Spa. Goldsmith was given a Sustainability Award for her project.

Students presented with an Award of Recognition included Louisiana Tech University student Erin M. Browning for her Kabuki Japanese Theater project; Stephanie Ploof, also from Washington State University, for her lighting design of the Thermae Spa; and Katie Gall and Heather Wise from Kansas State University for their Cornerstone Family Counseling project.

Professional winners Sean O’Connor and Martha Lopacki and the design team from Robert Singer & Associates received a $2000 monetary award and student winner Emily Myers received $1500. The honorable mention students were awarded $500 each. All winners were presented with a crystal trophy and offered an invitation to attend a complimentary class at the SOURCE, Cooper Lighting’s state-of-the-art education center.  The students’ professor/instructors are also invited to attend a class. All winners received national and local publicity.

The annual competition, which focuses on furthering the understanding, knowledge and function of lighting as a primary element in design, requires the primary and predominant use of Cooper Lighting products. Cooper Lighting has held this competition since 1977.  Entries are judged on the blending of aesthetics, creative achievement and technical performance and the degree in which lighting met the project constraints and design concept goals.
