Recently, the government of a major metropolitan city in the Southeastern part of the United States, issued a RFP; the specifications called for a double-ended LED tube that worked on line voltage (Type B per UL definition).

After the award was made, the product of the winning bid was announced.  The city government had awarded to a company offering a UL Type A certified LED tube that worked off the ballast-compatible operation only. Needless to say, jaws dropped!  

The selected Type A LED tube can be double-end wired on line voltage; however, it isn’t UL certified for this type of operation. The sales people misled the chief electrician from the City, claiming that it had the UL certification for this type of operation, which in fact it didn’t.

If the City would have used the awarded tube, it would have engaged in a non-compliant use of a UL certified product which voids automatically the UL certificate. Moreover, it would have violated the safety regulations, voided the insurance coverage, and subjected the City personnel to unnecessary physical injuries and increased the potential liability for lawsuits. The City made the right choice, and threw the awardee out after unearthing the truth.
