Around 250 attendees participated in the 14th annual DOE Solid-State Lighting R&D Workshop, held January 31–February 2 in Long Beach, CA. The workshop combined plenary and LED/OLED breakout sessions, with presentations from 60 experts addressing such diverse lighting topics as LEDs in agriculture; lighting integration and connected lighting; core R&D challenges such as materials, down-conversion, and light extraction; manufacturing methods and challenges; and human physiological responses to light.
The mix of perspectives spanning universities, labs, and companies large and small generated a robust and exciting exchange of ideas on SSL research, product development, and manufacturing R&D needs. The input gathered from attendees will inform updates to the DOE SSL R&D Plan, which is widely consulted by government and industry both here and abroad, and also guides DOE's SSL funding solicitations.
